Audience response systems are becoming popular in education. It is both fun and interesting to get real time feedback from the class about a question. Today we are going to take a look at a way you can create a simple audience response system in Moodle.
To do this we are going to make use of a Moodle Choice activity and an automatic refresher website.
You can find many automatic refresher websites but this one works nicely:
Create a choice activity and set the option to allow the choice to be updated to Yes. Also, change the option to publish results to Show results to students only after the choice is closed. The other settings you can set as you desire.
This will create a system whereby the students can go in and select an option. Throughout the session they can change their option if they desire as well. The only person who can view the results however is you as the teacher.
Now on the screen at the front you want to go into the Moodle choice activity as a teacher so you can see the results then select and copy the url for that page. Now go to the website mentioned above and paste the url in. Set the refresh period to something low like 5 seconds. Now the page will refresh every 5 seconds and you and the class can see the results in real time on the screen.
For instance, you may be giving a class on Gallipoli. The question may be something like:
Do you believe the army was justified in sending as many troops as they did out over the trenches?
As your delivering your class the students can updated their opinion and see what the general opinion of the class is.
I think this is most interesting when you are delivering a class that has the potential to change students opinions on a subject and can observe that opinion changing as you deliver it.
As usual, experiment and see what works best for you.
